"My candle burns..."

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

My candle burns at both ends.
It will not last the night.
But, ah my foes, and oh, my friends,
It gives a lovely light.

  1. This almost makes exhaustion and overwork sound beautiful. It does make me smile as there is some truth in that. And it reminds me of how you are able to face even chaos with humor. To anyone who might read this: Nancy had a saying above her desk at seminary that read, "in case of emergency, please be quiet." Love it!

  2. Thanks, Mary, for these thoughts. I've been thinking a lot lately about how superficial the goal of a well-balanced life can be. Was Jesus well-balanced, well-adjusted? I think not. And people who strive to give expression to their creative gifts are not inviting balance into their lives. To follow the Spirit, to be disciples of Jesus--whatever that means and wherever it sends us, those are goals we can give our lives to.
